This is a question that I get asked all the time, especially from people who are new to the leather world.
There are many reasons for this, but I’ll try to explain the most important ones.
The first reason is that it takes a lot of time and effort to make high quality leather products. The tanning process alone can take up to 6 months before you get a finished product, and there are many steps involved in between.
Another reason is that leather is not cheap. The raw materials used in making leather goods like hides, skins and pelts are expensive because they’re all natural products that come from animals and require a lot of work to get them ready for use in manufacturing. These raw materials also vary greatly depending on which animal they come from, so even if you want only one type of leather (e.g., cowhide), you may need to buy different types of hides depending on what type of product you want to make (e.g., footwear).
Finally, there’s also the cost of labor involved in creating leather goods — from tanning through finishing and finally shipping the finished product from the factory to your doorstep — which also affects the final price tag when you buy something made out of leather.”
