Why hasn’t the USA ever won the World Cup football?

The United States has never won the World Cup, but it’s not for lack of trying.

The Americans have qualified eight times since 1990, but they’ve never gotten past the round of 16. The closest they came was in 2002, when they lost to Germany on a goal in overtime.

But that doesn’t mean they’re not competitive. They’re currently ranked No. 12 in the world by FIFA, one spot behind Ghana and two spots behind Portugal.

They also have some notable players on their roster: Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders), Tim Howard (Everton), Jozy Altidore (Sunderland) and DeAndre Yedlin (Sunderland). Injuries prevented Landon Donovan from making the squad this year, but he’s one of the best American players ever and played in three World Cups before retiring from international play last year.
