Guinea pigs are extremely social animals. They are very affectionate, even snuggly, and love to be petted and held.

However, they also need their own space and time to themselves. If you’re a new guinea pig owner, it can be tempting to pick up your cavy and hold him or her all the time – don’t! It is not only stressful for the guinea pig but can also cause injury if you squeeze too tightly or drop them accidentally.

The best thing to do when introducing a new guinea pig into the home is to give them a cage which has plenty of space for them to run around in, as well as hidey holes where they can feel safe from predators (including humans!). Guinea pigs like to wander around their cage and explore new areas so make sure that your cage has lots of toys and areas for them to hide in if they want some peace and quiet!
