My dog keeps looking out the window at night, and I can’t figure out why. Is he expecting someone? Does he just like to see what’s going on in the neighborhood? Or is there something else going on in his head?
Unfortunately, we don’t have the answer to these questions. Dogs are very intelligent animals, so it’s possible that your dog is looking outside for some reason that only makes sense to him. However, there are some other possibilities that might explain it better:
Your dog may be looking for a familiar person or animal who isn’t around. If you are away from home during the day and come home at night, your dog may be checking for you.
Dogs who live in apartments or condos may be looking for their owners through their windows because they’re bored and want some attention. Dogs that are left alone all day often become anxious when they’re left alone at night too — after all, when we go to sleep at night and don’t leave the house until morning, we don’t expect anyone else to be awake either!
If your dog barks when he sees someone outside (particularly people), this could be an example of territorial behavior.
