Why Does My Cat Scratch The Sides Of The Litter Box ?

You’ve probably noticed that your cat scratches the sides of the litter box . It’s normal behavior, but there are a few possible reasons why they do it.

The litter may be too soft or too hard. Some cats like softer litters like wheat or pine, while others prefer harder litters like clay or sand. If you’re using clumping clay litter, try switching to another type of litter. Some cats also prefer fine-grained litters over coarse-grained ones, so experiment with different brands until you find one that works for your furry friend.

They could be marking their territory. Cats have scent glands between their toes and on their paws that they rub against objects to mark them as theirs. You might notice your cat scratching the side of the box before they use it as a way of saying “I was here first!”

Your cat may have allergies or sensitivities to certain ingredients in their food or treats, which can lead to them scratching more often than usual (source). A trial-and-error approach is often necessary when dealing with allergies.
