Why Do Hats Have Holes?

Hats are not just a fashion accessory, they are also used for practical purposes. The holes in the hat are there to help keep your head warm and to protect you from the elements.

Hats were worn for centuries before they came into popular use in the 19th century. Early hats were made of straw or felt, among other materials. They kept their shape because they were stiffened with glue or wire frames.

In 1871, Joseph Cohen invented elastic thread, which was used in hats to make them softer and more comfortable. This new material allowed women to wear hats while they rode bicycles or roller skates without causing injury to their hair.

The first baseball caps appeared around 1849, but it wasn’t until 1900 that they became popular as a way for players on both teams to cover their eyes while playing the game. The caps also helped prevent sunburns when playing outdoors during the summer months.

As more women began working outside the home and riding bicycles, many complained about having their hair damaged by their hats blowing off in high winds or falling over into traffic while riding on busy streets and sidewalks. In response, some hat makers started adding elastic bands around the base of their hats so that they would stay on better even if caught by wind gusts.
