There are two reasons why the horse crossed the road. One is to get away from a very bad man who was chasing him. The other is because he wanted to get to the other side.
The first reason is true, but that’s not what the question is about. We’re interested in the second reason.
If we want to understand why anything happens, we need to look at what makes it happen: what does it depend on? What causes it?
In this case, we can say that the horse crossed the road because he wanted to get to the other side.
But why did he want to get there? He could have just stayed where he was or gone in any direction if he wasn’t going anywhere in particular. So what made him want one particular direction more than any other?
