Have no fear: You’re not alone. Many people have experienced this issue with their AirPods, and there’s an easy fix.
Apple’s support page says that “the noise comes from the plastic exterior of the AirPods case.” It can happen when “your AirPods are exposed to a sudden change in temperature,” though it doesn’t say what that means.
The solution is to let your AirPods sit in room temperature for about 20 minutes before you use them again. That should do the trick, but if it doesn’t, Apple suggests taking your AirPods out of the case and letting them sit for another 20 minutes until they’re warmed up again.
