7UP is the healthier choice. Both drinks contain artificial sweeteners and have the same amount of calories and sodium. However, 7UP has less sugar than Sprite (and Pepsi), which may be a good thing if you’re trying to cut down on your sugar intake. A 12-ounce can of Sprite contains 50 grams of sugar, while a 12-ounce can of 7UP contains 40 grams of sugar.
Both drinks contain artificial sweeteners, but the artificial sweetener in 7UP (sucralose) is considered safer than the artificial sweetener in Sprite (aspartame). Sucralose was approved by the FDA in 1999 after being studied for more than 20 years. Aspartame was approved by the FDA in 1981 based on studies conducted on rats and humans because they couldn’t find enough people who could safely consume large amounts of it over time without developing side effects such as headaches, dizziness or nausea.
7UP also contains sodium benzoate, an additive that helps prevent spoilage. Some studies have linked sodium benzoate to potential health problems, but there’s no evidence that the levels found in soft drinks are high enough to cause harm. If you’re concerned about sodium benzoate, you should skip both sodas and stick with water.
