I’ve had a few jobs in my life, but the one I’ll never do again is being a barista. It was one of those jobs that’s just so physically demanding and time-consuming that it ruins your body, your mind and your life.
I worked at a coffee shop for about three years, and the thing about being a barista is that you have to be ready for anything. You have to know how to make any type of coffee drink from scratch, from simple drip coffee to fancy espresso drinks. But you also have to know how to make food too — anything from jam on toast to pancakes with syrup or crème brûlée or whatever else they order up at the last minute (and before you ask: yes, this happens all the time).
On top of that, there were always customers who were angry because their drink wasn’t right or because they didn’t like the way their sandwich looked or because they wanted their order changed after it was made. And then there were times when they didn’t want to pay for their meal even though it was clearly stated on our menu that we don’t serve free samples — which meant we had to refuse service and then deal with complaining customers calling us out for being.
