The mightiest reptile in the world was the sauropod. The sauropod dinosaurs were large, long-necked herbivores with small heads and strong tails. Sauropods had a huge body with a very long neck and tail.
They had four legs, although they walked on only their hind legs. They had small heads with tiny brains. Sauropods ate plants such as ferns and conifers that were growing in the forests of the Cretaceous period 140 million years ago.
Sauropod fossils have been found all over the world, including Argentina, Australia, China and North America. Fossils of these dinosaurs can be found in rock formations dating back about 200 million years ago to 65 million years ago (about 200 million years ago). These huge creatures lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (200-65 million years ago).
