So what is the point of the maze? Well, we know that they use it to keep people inside a certain area. So maybe it’s to keep people from escaping or something like that. But what if there’s more? What if the maze itself is more than just a prison? In Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, there are passages for water and electricity, so maybe those passages have other purposes as well.
It could be that these passages were dug by hand, by Thomas and his friends when they were trying to escape after Teresa died during the flare-up at WCKD headquarters. But if you look at them carefully, they don’t look like they were dug by hand, they look like they were carved out by machines or heavy equipment.
Maybe WCKD has some kind of technology that allows them to carve out tunnels quickly and easily without having to dig them by hand first. Maybe they use this technology to create underground bases where no one can see them or hear them because there are no windows or doors on these bases so no one can tell where they are unless they know about the tunnels already (like Thomas does).
