The story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff is one of the most familiar, beloved and re-told fairy tales in all of Norway. In fact, it is so well known that there are many variations (or local adaptations) on the story, each with its own unique characteristics and details.
The story tells of three brothers who live in a cave in the mountains above a waterfall. One day, they decide to cross over it to visit some grass on the other side. But just as they are about to cross over, a big, bad troll comes along and tries to stop them from eating his grass by throwing rocks at them. He fails but he does succeed in scaring them away from crossing over for awhile.
As time goes by, however, hunger drives them back out of their cave again. And this time they come up with a plan: two of them will distract the troll while the third gets past him unnoticed with his cartload of hay (which makes him look like an ox). They try this approach but it fails miserably when the troll eats all three brothers right up!
