The highest capital in Europe is Lisbon, Portugal. Lisbon is the capital city of Portugal and is also one of the oldest cities in Western Europe having been founded in the 1st century BC. Lisbon’s population hovers around 550,000 people and is located on the west coast of the country.

The second highest capital in Europe is Madrid, Spain. Madrid was established as a Roman settlement and has been continually occupied ever since. Today it has a population of around 3 million people making it one of Spain’s largest cities. The city itself was originally built around two rivers that cross through its center and this creates a unique landscape for visitors to enjoy.

The third highest capital in Europe is Vienna, Austria. Vienna is located in central Europe and has been continuously inhabited since Celtic times when it was known as Vindobona (which means “belonging to the warriors”). Throughout its history Vienna has been attacked by many invaders including Napoleon, but today it remains one of Austria’s most beautiful cities with many parks and museums to explore while visiting there.
