Temple Run is an endless side-scrolling platform video game created by Keith Shepherd and Natalia Luckyanova, and developed by Imangi Studios. The objective of the game is to escape from a pursuing monster by running through a temple filled with obstacles such as gaps, cliffs and fires. The player runs by swiping their finger across the screen in order to turn their character left or right round corners.
The original version of Temple Run was released for iOS devices in August 2011, followed by an Android version in October that year. The game received a sequel in 2013, Temple Run 2, which introduced power-ups and new features such as zip lines and mine carts. A third installment, Temple Run: Brave, was released in 2012 as part of Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph” animated film project. The fourth installment in the series, Temple Run: Oz was released on March 27th 2017.
In September 2015, Temple Run 2 surpassed Candy Crush Saga as the most downloaded free app on iOS devices worldwide; it held this position until July 2016 when it was overtaken by Pokémon GO.
