Adult video arcades are a type of sex shop that primarily focus on the sale and rental of adult videos, or pornographic materials. Many such stores also offer some form of peep shows. The term “adult arcade” is also used to describe a venue where coin-operated devices such as video games and other amusement devices are made available for public use.
The first known adult arcade was opened in New York City in 1976 by Larry Marmorstein, who called it “Adult World.” The success of this venture led him to open more stores throughout the country. By 1979 he had opened six more stores and had made an estimated $1 million in profit from his business venture.
In 1980 he sold his company to another entrepreneur named Michael Zaffarano who proceeded to open more locations throughout the country under the name “Adult World.”
Zaffarano’s business model differed from that of Marmorstein’s in that he did not sell any products but rather made all of his profit from rentals and fees charged for using the coin-operated machines which were located inside of each store.
There are currently over 1,000 adult arcades operating across North America with most being located within large cities such as New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago where they provide customers with an opportunity.
