I have the same piercing and it was done with a 14 gauge needle. I’m not sure if it’s possible to get any smaller than that. They really don’t want to hurt you too much, but they also want to make sure you’re pierced properly so they don’t want to go too small on you either.
I’m no expert on any of this stuff, but I can tell you what happened to me when I got mine pierced.
The first time I went in for my piercing appointment, the piercer told me that he’d be using a 16 gauge needle and asked if that was okay for me. I said yes, because it was smaller than what I thought he would use (18 gauge). When he actually went to do it though, he used a 14 gauge needle instead because he said it would cause less bleeding and bruising than an 18 gauge one would have caused.
I had no trouble with my septum at all. It didn’t bleed at all during or after the procedure and there wasn’t much swelling or pain involved either (it was just like getting punched in the face… kind of). It took about three weeks for my septum to fully heal up though (the average healing time is around two weeks), so be prepared.
