What Does The Name Ponyo Mean?

Ponyo is a 2008 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, produced by Toshio Suzuki, and animated by Studio Ghibli. The film stars the voices of Yuria Nara, Taro Yamaguchi, Mari Natsuki, Yoko Suzuki and Kazushige Nagashima.

The film tells the story of Sosuke, a five-year-old boy who befriends a goldfish princess who longs to become human after falling in love with him. She is eventually transformed into a human girl named Ponyo who develops feelings for Sosuke’s younger sister Satsuko.

The main antagonist is an energy being called Namazu who has been asleep under the sea for centuries but awakens when humans begin extracting oil from his body; he wants to flood the world to return it to its natural state.
