Who are they?

Mechanical engineers are involved in the design, development and maintenance of mechanical systems, including mechanical structures and products. They provide the link between engineering theory, design and practice.

What do they do?

As well as designing new machines and processes, mechanical engineers develop products such as cars, aircraft, machine tools and heating systems. They also work on projects to improve existing machines and equipment. Mechanical engineers may also be required to test prototypes before production begins.

Skills required:

Mechanical engineers need an excellent mathematical ability because most problems in this field can be expressed mathematically. They should also have good technical knowledge and be able to apply their knowledge practically. Strong communication skills are essential for anyone working with people from different disciplines or working on cross-functional teams.
