A primer is a product applied before makeup to smooth the skin and make it easier for makeup to adhere. It can also fill in pores, fine lines and wrinkles to create an even surface for your foundation.
A primer should be used for all skin types, but especially if you have oily or combination skin. If you have dry skin, primers with hydrating ingredients like shea butter or jojoba oil are best. A primer can be used as often as you like — sometimes twice a day if you feel like it!
But what can I use instead of primer? Well, there’s no need to spend money on primers when there are so many other things that could do the job just as well or better! Here are some ideas:
Lip balm: Lip balms create a smooth base for lipstick or glosses, and they’re great at preventing feathering and bleeding of lip color. Plus they’re cheap! Just remember not to apply too much — just enough so that your lips feel moisturized without any excess product on them.
Mascara: If you have short lashes, mascara can help give them length by coating them with black pigment. But mascara isn’t just for lengthening; it also creates.
