Game of Thrones is an American show — but it’s based on a British book series. That might be confusing for some people, but it’s pretty simple. Here’s what you need to know about the difference between UK and US TV shows.
Game of Thrones is an HBO show, which means it airs on HBO in the United States and Sky Atlantic in the UK. It’s based on a series of books called A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin.
The first book was published in 1996, while the fifth book (A Dance With Dragons) came out in 2011. There are currently no official plans for a sixth book, though Martin has said he hopes to finish The Winds of Winter before Game of Thrones season 8 airs in 2019 or 2020.
In 2015, HBO announced that it was developing its own TV adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire with showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss (D&D). They started working on the first season while they were still filming seasons 3 and 4 of their hit series Game Of Thrones (GOT).
