Separating Sugar and Sand

Separating Sugar and Sand with a Magnet

This method is one of the easiest ways to separate different types of materials. The trick is to use a magnet that attracts iron, which is what most of the sand on this planet consists of. Since sugar does not contain any iron, it will not be attracted by the magnet, allowing you to easily remove it from your mixture.

1. Put the sand into a blender with a little bit of water, then pulse it until you get a fine sand slurry. Pour this into a funnel, then filter it through paper towels or cheesecloth. The paper towels or cheesecloth will catch most of the larger grains of sand as well as any dirt or other impurities that may have gotten into the mixture. Then you can pour the filtered liquid into another container, leaving behind what is left in your filter.
2. You can also use a centrifuge to separate sugar from sand by spinning it at high speed and allowing denser materials to settle out by gravity. If you have one available, this is probably your best bet.
