When your roommate is gone, you can keep them out by using a lock box. This is a metal or plastic container that you put on your front door knob, and inside it you place a key. You then close the lock box and put the key in it. Only when the lock box is unlocked can you open the door and get in.

If you don’t have an extra key for your roommate’s room, this is a good way to keep someone out if they have one of their own. You can also use this method if your roommate has a separate entrance to their room, such as through their own door or through a window.

The first thing to do is remove the old lock from your door. This may seem complicated, but it’s actually easy once you know how:
