Chickens have four toes on each foot, and their legs are located close together, which means that they don’t need to move their legs very far when walking. This enables them to be able to walk easily on top of fences or walls without falling off.
Chickens are able to walk, run, jump and fly. They also swim if they need to, although they don’t do this as often as other birds.
The feet of chickens have three toes facing forward and one toe facing backward. The first toe is used for perching on branches or fences and the second is used for scratching under bushes and trees for food. The third toe is larger than the others and has a nail on it which helps them dig into soft ground to find food such as worms.
