England has won the World Cup only once, in 1966 when they defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley Stadium.
The Three Lions have been runners-up four times: in 1950, when they lost to the United States; in 1990, when they lost 2-1 against West Germany; in 2002, losing 1-0 to Brazil on penalties; and most recently in 2018, losing 2-1 against Croatia at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
England has participated in 12 World Cup tournaments, but has only qualified for two tournaments since 1990 (1994 and 2006).
The first World Cup was held in Uruguay from 13 July to 30 July 1930. Uruguay won the tournament by defeating Argentina 4-2 in the final game before a crowd of 93,000 spectators at Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.
