If you have a bag of red skittles, it is not uncommon for there to be 20 or 30 red skittles in the bag. This is because each bag of skittles is filled with a random assortment of colors, so there will be no specific number of reds, greens, yellows and so on.

The original Skittles were created by British confectioner Rowntree’s in the early 1970s, who sold them as “Taste the Rainbow” candies. The candy was originally produced in two colors: red and green. Rowntree’s later added yellow, orange and purple varieties to the mix.

In 1998, Nestle acquired Rowntree’s and continued producing Skittles candies at their factory in York until 2007 when production was moved to Poland. In 2011, Wrigley purchased Nestle’s candy division for $2.6 billion USD.
