How many genders are there according to science?

Gender is a complicated concept. It’s not just about what’s between your legs; it’s also about how you feel and how you identify with your body.

In the past, we’ve talked about how science has shown that there are more than two genders — but there are still some people who don’t believe that. They think that gender is a binary thing, meaning that you’re either male or female (and if you’re transgender, then you were born one way but feel like something else). But there are actually many different ways to describe yourself as a human being.

There are at least five main gender categories: male, female, transgender/nonbinary, intersex and third-gender.

Some people may not fit into any category at all; they might identify as agender or neutrois. Others might identify as demigirl or demiboy — these terms mean that they feel like half of a certain gender (for example, demigirls have some of the traits associated with girls). Some people also use other labels like genderfluid or genderqueer when talking about their identity.
