How Long Is 60 Miles?

How long is 60 miles? The answer to this question depends on your point of view.

If you are driving a car, the answer is quite simple. The US Department of Transportation defines one mile as 5,280 feet. That means 60 miles is equal to 33,600 feet or 5,280 yards.

But if you are a runner, that distance will feel much greater. For example, a marathon is 26 miles and 385 yards long.

The idea that one mile is 5,280 feet came from England in the 1600s when King Charles II established the British Mile as 1/8th of a degree of latitude along the equator (5,000 feet). Since then, we have come up with other ways to define a mile such as 1/10th of a nautical mile or 1/8th of an international statute mile (1,760 yards).
