Can you track a scammer by their cellphone number?
The answer is yes, but you have to be careful. Scammers often use prepaid “burner” phones (cheap phones that they can buy anonymously) or stolen phones that they don’t care about getting caught on. So if you’re trying to track down your scammer’s real identity, there may not be any useful information in the phone number.
If the scammer uses his own phone or has given out his real number, then it’s possible that there might be some information in the call logs that could help you track him down. But even then, it’s not guaranteed that the call logs will reveal his identity — scammers sometimes use VOIP phones with no direct billing records for each call.
As usual, if someone is asking for money from you and isn’t willing to give out their name or location (or even a photo), then there’s probably something fishy going on here.
